    A nanometer is one millionth of a millimeter (.000001 mm) or approximately the same length as 10 atoms set side by side. By comparison, the diameter of an average strand of human hair is 50,000 nanometers while the average magnetic spacing between the disk and the head for a modern disk drive is typically less than one nanometer.
